What Is an AI Confidence Score?
When you check an Etsy listing with Handmade Checker, you see one of three results: Likely Handmade, Possibly AI-Assisted, or Highly Suspect. This is the AI Confidence Score. But what does it actually mean, and how should you use it when deciding what to buy?
The three labels explained
Likely Handmade means the listing looks like it was created by a real person. The photos appear authentic, the description sounds genuine, and there is no strong evidence of AI involvement. These listings are the safest bet if you are looking for something truly handmade.
Possibly AI-Assisted means some elements of the listing might have used AI. Maybe the seller used AI to help write the description or enhance the photos. This does not mean the product itself is bad, but it is worth looking closer before you buy.
Highly Suspect means the listing shows strong signs of AI generation. The photos may be AI-generated, the description might be copied from elsewhere, or the listing looks like it was put together with minimal human effort. These are the listings to be most careful about.
How the score is calculated
Handmade Checker analyzes three things about each listing: the main photo, the title, and the description. It looks for patterns that are common in AI-generated content - like unnatural lighting in images, repetitive phrasing, or descriptions that lack specific details about the making process. The analysis happens privately and nothing is stored or shared.
What the score is not
The AI Confidence Score is not a judgment of the product quality. A listing scored as Highly Suspect could still be a good product, made by someone who just used AI to create their listing. And a Likely Handmade score does not guarantee the product is well-made. Think of it as one piece of information to help you make a more informed decision, not the final word.
Using the score when you shop
The best way to use the AI Confidence Score is as a starting point. If a listing is Highly Suspect, look closer at the photos and description. Read reviews from other buyers. Check the seller's shop history. If a listing is Likely Handmade, you can feel more confident that what you see is what you will get. Over time, you will develop a better sense of which listings to trust.
